Fall has arrived and with that, the beautiful changing of the colors in the mountains.

My wife and I made the trip over Kenosha Pass with our big Golden Doodle “Louie” to take in the majestic scenery. I wanted to give you some other areas to check out.

Here are five of the best places to see the fall colors in Colorado, offering a mix of stunning landscapes, scenic drives, and outdoor activities:

  1. Aspen (Maroon Bells)
    • Description: Perhaps the most iconic spot for fall colors, Aspen gets its name from the large groves of aspen trees that blanket the surrounding mountains. The Maroon Bells are a must-see, with towering peaks reflecting in the crystal-clear lake below, framed by golden aspens in late September to early October. This area offers both easy walks and longer hikes.
    • Best Time to Visit: Late September to early October.
  1. Kebler Pass (Crested Butte)
    • Description: Kebler Pass, near Crested Butte, is home to one of the largest aspen groves in North America. The road itself is a gorgeous scenic drive, and the golden aspens stretch endlessly across the mountainsides. For those wanting to explore deeper, there are hiking and biking trails nearby that showcase the changing colors.
    • Best Time to Visit: Mid-September to early October.
  1. Rocky Mountain National Park
    • Description: With its variety of elevations and landscapes, Rocky Mountain National Park provides a wide range of fall color experiences. The park’s many scenic drives, like Trail Ridge Road, take you through forests of changing aspens, with views of towering peaks and wildlife like elk during rutting season. Hiking trails like Bear Lake Loop offer close-up views of the autumn splendor.
    • Best Time to Visit: Late September to early October.
  1. San Juan Skyway (Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride)
    • Description: This 236-mile loop is one of Colorado’s most breathtaking scenic drives, especially during fall. Starting in Durango, the drive winds through the San Juan Mountains, passing through historic mining towns like Silverton and Ouray. The area is known for its fiery red, orange, and golden aspens, contrasted by rugged peaks and waterfalls.
    • Best Time to Visit: Mid-September to early October.
  1. Guanella Pass (Georgetown to Grant)
    • Description: Less than an hour from Denver, Guanella Pass offers an accessible yet spectacular fall foliage experience. The pass connects Georgetown and Grant, winding through groves of aspen trees that turn brilliant shades of yellow in autumn. Along the route, you can stop for short hikes or enjoy a picnic while admiring the vibrant colors against the backdrop of Mount Bierstadt.
    • Best Time to Visit: Mid to late September.
Each of these locations offers a unique experience, from scenic drives to hiking opportunities, and provides an ideal way to enjoy Colorado’s stunning fall landscapes.
